In some cases, the NV Charts App does not show the GPS position or the reception is interrupted. This can also cause the track recording to be interrupted.
This can have the following reasons:
1) The location permission is disabled under your system permissions for the NV Charts App. > Set the location permissions for the NV Charts App to "Always allow" under the operating system settings for location permissions
2) The device is below deck or in a building > Check for good GPS reception There are also additional GPS Status Apps and in the NV Charts App in the Dashboard on the right side of the screen above the accuracy in meters or the number of available satellites (Only External GPS devices via NMEA RMC). You would need to have a accuracy of <50m for the NV Charts App to accept the position and not flag it as "No GPS"
Also try taking the device out of all protective covers.
Unfortunately, it seems that on some devices the reception performance of the internal GPS antennas is not always good enough for reliable navigation even in less than optimal reception conditions.
Even spray hoods or heavy cloud cover or rain can lead to limitations here.
In addition, different settings in the software can be another cause here. For this purpose, first the following steps:
Android:
Check battery optimisation.
The app "GPS Status & Toolbox" can be installed to see how the GPS signal quality is, which is delivered by the operating system location sensor. Here, the accuracy should be less than 10m and COG and speed should also be displayed when the device moves over a few 100m.
The bars for the reception quality should also be displayed in green.
On the device, again make sure that the location permissions for the NV Charts App is set to "always".
iOS:
Under iOS Settings > Battery > Battery status, the value should be above 85% and the battery should be classified for high performance, otherwise it will be "optimised" here and the GPS can be deactivated.
Then install the app GPS Status ∞ https://apps.apple.com/de/app/gps-status/id1254805862. Here you can see what GPS data the operating system location sensor provides. The accuracy should be better than 10m and COG and speed should also be displayed if the device moves over a few 100m.
Again, make sure that the location permissions for the NV Charts app are set to "always".
If it is not possible to achieve good reception performance with these steps even in poor conditions, we recommend using external GPS receivers. These also have the advantage that the antenna can be positioned on board in a place with good reception and the GPS position can then be used via Bluetooth on the device, e.g. below deck. We have good experience with the Garmin GLO2 (iOS, Android, Windows), which is available in our webshop. https://eu.nvcharts.com/31618/garmin-glo-2-gps-receiver-with-bluetooth-connection/
3) The device does not have a real GPS built-in. In other apps the position may be obtained e.g. via IP address. The NV Charts App however only uses GPS positions. > Look in the device specifications for GPS / GLONASS or GNSS position sensor.
4) With Android, battery optimizations are made by the operating system. Here the GPS is often switched off for apps. Deactivate the optimization for NV Charts App in the operating system settings.
Go to Android Settings > Battery > Battery optimization > Show all apps > deactivate optimization for NV Charts app
- Why doesn't the NV Charts app receive GPS?
- Why does the NV Charts App not have a position?
